The Swiss assisted suicide organisation Exit assisted 257 people’s suicides in 2010, an increase of 15% since 2009, where there were a total of 216 assisted deaths. The organisation, which has branches in both the German and French-speaking regions, saw its overall membership increase by 4,000 members to a total of 70,000. (Anyone who uses Exit’s services must be a member.) According to Exit, this rise was a reaction to moves by local and national authorities for stricter controls over assisted suicide services. The group said it received 421 requests for assistance in 2010. The average age of people who used assisted suicide to end their lives in 2010 was 76; in 2009 it was 74. ~ Swissinfo.ch, Apr 5
