Voters in Mississippi will have the chance to decide on the personhood of the unborn in November. The Mississippi Supreme Court has allowed Measure 26, or “the Personhood Amendment”, to appear in the state ballot. The measure would amend the state’s constitution to extend legal personhood to the unborn – which is likely to make abortions illegal in Mississippi.

Opponents of abortion hope that the amendment will be upheld and appealed to the US Supreme Court, giving it a chance to overturn Roe v Wade. Steve Crampton, of conservative legal association Liberty Counsel, said: “Although our opponents were beaten in this lawsuit, we know that they will not stop in their desperate attempts to deny the obvious truth that life begins at conception and that every life deserves to be protected in the law. Not only Mississippians, but all Americans, should support this commonsense amendment.”

Abortion-rights groups were upset. “A measure will be on the ballot that will allow the government to dictate what is a private matter that’s best decided by a woman, her family and within the context of her faith. Mississippi voters should reject this intrusive and dangerous measure,” said Nsombi Lambright of the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi.
