IVF young adults are well-adjusted and happy, say researchers
An Australian study has found that IVF-conceived children are just as well-adjusted and satisfied with life as naturally-conceived children.
An Australian study has found that IVF-conceived children are just as well-adjusted and satisfied with life as naturally-conceived children. The major difference seemed to be that young IVF-conceived adults were more positive about things like safety, finances and learning opportunities.
The results of a longitudinal study of 1100 adults aged between 18 and 29 were released at the recent annual conference of the Fertility Society of Australia.
IVF doctors feel that these results confirm that artificial reproduction is safe for children’s social and psychological health. This is an important factor now that the first generation of IVF babies are having their own children, some through IVF themselves.
“The results aren’t surprising, because there’s no doubt these kids were wanted,” Melbourne IVF’s medical director Dr Lyndon Hale told the Herald Sun. “Common sense suggests that these kids would have lots of input from their parents.”
The study involved researchers from Monash and Melbourne IVF, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, the Jean Hailes Research Unit, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the University of Melbourne. ~ Herald Sun, Oct 30
