The author of the recent review of Britain’s gender identity services for children and young people has told The Times (of London) that she needs police protection after the release of the report. Professor Hilary Cass said that she had received online abuse and had been told not to use public transport. 

Ironically, her report claimed that children had been let down by a “toxic” public discourse around gender.

Professor Cass told The Times: “I have been really frustrated by the criticisms, because it is straight disinformation. It is completely inaccurate.”

 “There are some pretty vile emails coming in at the moment, most of which my team is protecting me from, so I’m not getting to see them,” she said. 

“What dismays me is just how childish the debate can become. If I don’t agree with somebody then I’m called transphobic or a Terf [trans-exclusionary radical feminist].”

She also said that many of the staff of the gender clinics had been uncooperative. According to The Times: “Six clinics had thwarted her review by refusing to co-operate with research into the long-term impact of prescribing puberty blockers and sex hormones. She described their failure to share data as ‘co-ordinated’ and ‘ideologically driven’.”

NHS England has announced that a second review will take place into adult gender clinics. Professor Cass told the Times that she would not take part in the adult report after the abuse she suffered in recent weeks. She said: “You heard it right here: I am not going to do the adult gender clinic review.”
