A financier has been selected to head California’s
public stem cell
research agency. The board of the California Institute for Regenerative
Medicine selected its next chairman, Jonathan Thomas, by a vote of 14 to 11.
Thomas, an investment banker, will succeed longtime chairman Robert Klein.
Klein’s reign as chairman has been rife with controversy due to his hands-on
approach at the agency, which led to high turnover among the agency’s chief
executives. Klein had planned to resign late last year, but agreed to stay on
for another six months when his candidate withdrew from the pool amid
accusations of backroom deals. Thomas narrowly won the majority of the board’s
