Over 700 women have had abortions while pregnant through IVF, according to Britain’s fertility watchdog.

700 women have had abortions while pregnant through IVF,
according to Britain’s fertility watchdog. Most abortions were within weeks of
the test-tube baby being implanted after mothers had a change of heart. A small
number resulted from medical complications, according to the Human
Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). As many as 50 IVF babies are
terminated each year, as well as a smaller number of abortions for women who
used other fertility treatments such as donor insemination. In the 19 years
that the HFEA has kept statistics, 749 IVF pregnancies have been aborted.

The
figure, revealed last week in response to a freedom of information request,
will alarm many because of the rigorous medical procedures women undergo with
IVF. Half of the terminations resulted from relationship breakdowns or fears
over motherhood, and the most common were Down syndrome and foetal
abnormalities. Josephine Quintavalle, of Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said:
