American Indian tribe considers DNA testing to determine casino profit entitlement

With members of Native American tribes entitled to a
share of casino revenues, many tribes are resorting to genetic testing to
guarantee authentic descent. The Chukchansi tribe, which operates the Chukchansi Gold
Resort and Casino in California at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain
range, will soon vote on whether to introduce a DNA paternity test to determine
the validity of claims to membership. Central to the tribe’s concerns is that
the tribe has expanded from 23 in the 1980s to over 1,000 at present. Around
700 members have been expelled through non-genetic means since 2003 when their
casino opened. Chairman Reggie Lewis says:

“Since
we started a casino a few years ago, all of a sudden we had Chukchansis coming
out of the woodwork. We thought DNA
would be a way to make sure that we only get people who are qualified to be in
the tribe in the tribe.” Others argue that the
decision is motivated by a desire that the remaining members receive an even
larger share of the casino’s revenues. ~ OnlinePoker.net
