cycles of IVF
treatment will be guaranteed to military personnel whose fertility has been
affected by injuries sustained in the service, the UK’s Defence Secretary Liam
Fox announced yesterday. Three cycles of free IVF treatment will be granted to
military families where a soldier has sustained general injuries which make it
difficult to conceive – which commonly happens in Afghanistan, where many have
been injured by roadside bombs. Dr Fox said: “The obligation we owe to our
service men and women, set against the commitment and sacrifice that they make,
is enormous”.

The
measure was one in a package that Dr Fox announced as the UK government sought
to incorporate the principles of the military covenant – the mutual obligations
between the nation and its armed forces – into law. The military covenant has –
until now – been an unwritten agreement under which the state pledges a duty of
care toward its military personnel who may be called upon to sacrifice their
lives for the service of their country. ~ London
