Australian political leader criticizes US ‘politicization’ of abortion
The man tipped to be Australia’s next Prime Minister has criticized the US for making abortion a political issue.
The man tipped to be Australia’s next Prime Minister has criticized the US for making abortion a political issue. Tony Abbott, currently the leader of Liberal Party (conservatives, for non-Australians), made the comments in an interview last Tuesday. Abbott said, “The last thing we should want to do in this great country of ours is to politicise issues like this and go down the American path”. He continued, “this is one area in which I say to the Americans, you do it your way, fine, but we’re never going to do it that way here in Australia.”
Mr Abbott, a practicing Catholic, was widely criticised for trying to limit access to RU-486 when he was Minister for Health. He appears to have changed his opinion on abortion since then, and recently stated that abortion law will not change under his government if he is elected. Over one third of the Liberal Party frontbench are pro-choice.
