Timo Konietzka, former Germany international and the first footballer to score a goal in the country’s Bundesliga competition, died on Monday by assisted suicide, his wife reported to German media.

Timo Konietzka, former Germany international and the first footballer to score a goal in the country’s Bundesliga competition, died on Monday by assisted suicide with the help of Swiss assisted suicde group Exit, his wife reported to German media. The 73-year-old had been suffering from cancer in recent years. His wife Claudia told German newspaper Bild that he “decided it was time to die”. Konietzka scored the first ever goal in the Bundesliga in 1963, for Borussia Dortmund, in the first minute of the game against Werder Bremen, which his team eventually lost. He later became a coach for FC Zurich, leading them to 4 league titles in Switzerland.

Konietzka was an advocate for “mercy killing” and appeared on TV in  2010 to support it, saying in an interview that he was planning his death. ~ Football.co.uk, Mar 13: Independent, March 15
